Thursday 22 June 2023: Alan having started on the Ashton grave last Sunday wanted to do a bit of work on it to get ready for the next work session. He worked on the left hand side of the double grave which had sunk badly and the base concrete was broken in pieces. He raised the lower part up making it level and managed to find all the concrete slab pieces to lay it back together again. Photo taken of before and after.
Back to this Sunday and another hot sunny day with possible thunderstorms coming in early afternoon – that thankfully did not materialise. As well as the Friends working team of Dave, Astrid, Chris D., Alan and Rita, they were joined by seven members of the Sedgemoor Conservation Volunteers all working together which was very good company.
Dave, Chris, Alan and three of the volunteers worked clearing the ground at the North end of the cemetery which was started when they came in a few weeks ago. Nettles and bramble roots were cleared, still more ground needs to be dug over for shrubs which we hope to plant in the Autumn, but due to the hot weather the ground is far too hard to dig.
The rest of the group spent their time trimming back the low branches of the nearby trees, and young Freya did a great job in clearing ivy from a number of headstones and graves, including the Harding grave 11-49 that was particularly thick with ivy.
The new dumpy mobile truck worked hard taking at least 8 full dumpy bags to the storage area. Another good working day and many thanks to the conservationists for their great work in such hot conditions.
