Diary: Sunday 2 July 2023

Alan, Astrid, Chris A, Chris D. and Dave in the cemetery today (2 July 2023).

2 July 2023

The team started work on the Washer 10-45 headstone. The headstone is laid down a short distance from the kerbs that both Chris’s had levelled up and cemented back together a couple of weeks ago. Today’s task was to put rollers under the headstone and roll it along until it sat on the kerbs. This went very smoothly and Chris D and Astrid did an excellent job levelling up the earth around the headstone. Astrid then gave the headstone a good clean that has exposed the lead lettering. A photo was taken to record their efforts.

Leaving Astrid and Chris at the Washer grave, Alan, Dave and Chris A. went over to the Ashton grave 7-58 that the team have been working on for the last month. The job today was to cement the kerbs back together, with Dave mixing the cement and Chris and Alan working on the kerbs, the job was soon completed. The next job was to concrete the gaps between the kerbs and concrete slab that covered the grave, Chris D came over and with Dave made up the concrete leaving Chris A and Alan to fill the gaps with rubble and add a concrete mix to complete.

Still a little more work to be done but the Ashton memorial is now beginning to look splendid.

While the lads were working on the Ashton grave, Astrid was working hard on the Spil1er 8-47 cutting back the brambles that had taken over the memorial that is made up of large boulders, what a difference she has made.

Before the team left they had a look around to see what graves they would work on next and felt something a little less energetic perhaps, like tidying and clearing graves in and around plan 8. While walking around they sadly found a grave with kerbs that the Friends had recently repaired and cemented back together, to find that it had been hit by the mower dislodging the kerbs and now needs to be repaired again. Although disappointed the team were very pleased with their efforts today as photos taken will show.
