Diary: Sunday 1 October 2023

Alan, Rita, Astrid and Dave in the cemetery today (1 October 2023). Weather cloudy but warm. Rita and Astrid concentrated their efforts at the top corner next to Jam Factory Lane clearing the area of brambles, weeds and thick grass that was started by Miles and Astrid last week.

Alan and Dave continued work on the Boon grave started last week. Not a straight forward job due to the condition of the grave, the pads that the kerbs were sat on were packed and the two long kerbs and the two shaped end kerbs were cemented back together, it looked impressive. The next job was to sort out the centre concrete slab that was cracked and in many pieces. Like a jigsaw puzzle, the pieces were cemented back together and a thick layer of stone chipping was placed over the top to hide the cracks and holes. What an improvement from the grave that was in a sorry state, important as it was the first grave people see when entering the cemetery from the Halesleigh Road end.

In the meantime Rita and Astrid were busy cutting back the undergrowth that had taken over the corner patch that has been planned to have new trees planted as the existing ones are either diseased or saplings which are not in good condition, that are going to be removed by Somerset Council. Not an easy task but the girls got stuck in filling two large dumpy bags, still work to be done but good progress has been made.
