Diary: Sunday 3 August 2025

Astrid, Dave, Chris, Alan & Rita working in the cemetery today. All working in Section B & C doing a general clean up of overgrown graves, too many to mention them all.

Astrid continued from last weeks work by weeding the remainder of the wild flower garden.

Dave did a grand job cleaning out the Mountstevens B77 and Street B78 graves, plus others.

Rita cleaned out the Goodland B43 grave and took ivy off the Murrant C82 grave.

The Rookley B68 grave that Alan worked on last week had been disturbed, the black membrane had been lifted in all four corners and the stones were in a big pile in the centre of the grave, possibly the work of the badger resident next door looking for worms? Alan tidied it back to its original state and then moved over to the Smith B80 grave. This was weeded and the loose two end posts and long kerb was taken apart, the old cement cleaned off and all put back into position ready for cementing on another day.

Chris had the task of digging down the side of the three tiered Murlis C59 grave, that was worked on last week, as a new inscription could just be seen above the ground. It was surprising how much this had sunk below ground level and he dug a fair way down so the inscription could be recorded.

He then moved over to the Gratton C97, a red granite grave with stone chipping in. Chris cleaned out the weeds, then sieved all the dirt and dry earth from the stones and laid them back in the grave, a good job well done.

The other jobs left for Alan and Chris was to dig up some of the numerous ant hills growing up the sides and on the ends of the graves, not the best of jobs, luckily most of the flying ants had already flown.

It was a very humid morning and it was hot and sweaty work but then came a shower of rain which cooled everyone off and sent them packing up and heading for home.
