Weather forecast indicated to expect sun and occasional rain showers, but Astrid, Alan, Rita and Chris D were available and decided to take a chance (9th July 2023). They were rewarded with a nice morning with only one short shower.
Rita and Astrid concentrated on weeding the new wild flower area and planted a few flowers that they had grown from seed at home, giving them a good water, just in case it didn’t rain. Not quite sure what some of them are so hope to have a nice surprise when they come out in flower. They then went up to the old wild flower area which was really overgrown and transplanted the ones from there to the new plot. There were also a few flowering on the paupers area which has not been cut this year so a few of these were dug up and replanted, so the new wild flower area is beginning to look a little better.
Alan and Chris concentrated their efforts in Plan 7, close to the Ashton 7-58 and Crocker 7-65 graves. A number of graves in this area have headstones or kerbs but have been completely covered by grass. The lads worked on the Slocombe / Mockridge 7-60 double grave that has a large laid down headstone. Chris took on this challenge and in no time the headstone was uncovered ready for it to be cleaned so that the inscription can be more easily read. Alan was sorting out the headstone on the Ashton 7-58 the headstone is broken in three parts, he took them apart and cleaned out the earth and weeds that had sprung up between the breaks
Chris and Alan then moved on to the Goslin / Farthing 7-64 grave, again the headstone was laid down and broken in two parts, a little more work required on this one. The headstone had to be packed up so that it was laid flat with a slight slope for rainwater to run off. Chris took a photo of their work before and after. Everyone was pleased with their efforts and glad to make their way home for a rest.
