The Read Memorial E16/405

The Read memorial was repaired on 23 August 2017 by Fine Memorials for the Friends.

This simple cross remembers the family who ran the Railway Hotel by the station from about 1897 to 1911.

The inscription reads: 16/405 In Loving Memory of William Read who passed peacefully away October the 4th 1911 aged 61. Rest in Peace. Also Eliza Reed wife of the above died March 27th 1916. (Aged 81) Into thy hands we command her spirit for thou hast redeemed her O Lord.

The Western Gazette of 24 November 1911 noted: Mr William Read of the Railway Hotel Bridgwater, formerly of 45a Coleshill Street Pimlico, who died on 4 October last, left estate of the gross value of £810 18s 5d, and probate of his will has been granted to his widow, Mrs Eliza Read.

This memorial was chosen for repair as it adjoined the main path running from the main gate to the former Dissenters' chapel. By repairing this memorial this would neatly build upon the previous efforts all along that route. This was a straightforward job for Fine Memorials: the base was made secure with a new foundation to begin with. The three-tier plinth was then cemented back together. Finally the cross was pinned back into place.
