What a welcome for Astrid’s return, a nice sunny day in the cemetery today (29 January 2023), sadly Dave unable to make it, so get better soon Dave. Hopefully Chris will be back with us again soon. So a small working party of Astrid, Alan and Rita.
Both Alan and Rita popped in on Wednesday 25th and Friday 27th for a few hours, Alan working on the Crocker grave and digging the base stone clear from the roots, He finished this area off today by making it clean, tidy and safe. ready for us to contact SDC to advise them the tree is ready to be cut down so that Fine Memorial can re-erect the very elaborate Crocker memorial.
Alan then moved over to the Jarvis grave Plan 4-20 and chipped off the old cement on the kerbs and posts, this grave had previously been cleaned up by Chris. He discovered that a paving slab had been put in the grave at some time, unfortunately it is 2 inches too wide, as a result the kerbs and posts cannot be lined up correctly, it will have to be removed, cut to size so that the post and kerbs can be cemented back into their correct position.
Rita had been clearing the dead brambles alongside the fence at the bottom end of the cemetery, bordering on the back of Provident Place. So today with Astrid they continued with this until they got tired, and found an easier job of clearing the Burt grave Plan 1-12 and the Feaston Plan1-13. New Photographs were taken as the original ones on the website were looking a bit dark and unloved. The Burt grave was of George Ernest Burt aged just 8 weeks old.
It was nice to have a chat to one of the Friends members who regularly walks into the cemetery for a look around, it was lovely to see her. It was good to be back working with Astrid again and look forward to a ‘full house’ when the weather is better.
