Pte 3rd Reserve Battalion the Devonshire Regiment
Bernard Dyke was born in October 1897 in Bridgwater to Albert John and Edith Lucy Dyke. His father was from Bridgwater and his mother from Upton Wivelescombe. Two years later the family had a daughter called Hilda and in 1901 the family lived in 70 Camden Road, when his 29 year old father was noted as a Brewer's traveller. By 1911 there was another brother, Harold and the family had moved to 59 Wembdon Road.
Bernard had enlisted in Taunton, but he died in Britain on 18 January 1918. At the time of his death his parents lived in Parkstone House, Dawlish, Devon. On 22 January 1918 the Bridgwater Mercury reported on the tragic death of Bernard and stated that the inquest found that he had been accidentally killed on the Tregantle Rifle Ranges, near Plymouth. He had been educated at Dr Morgan's school in Bridgwater and was employed by Sully's accountants. A comment added that three of the staff of that firm had been killed in action including the General Manager (Mr E. W. Helps).
