26715 Pte 6th Battalion Somerset Light Infantry
Clifford Redding was born in October 1890 in Bridgwater. He was the son of baker William Henry Redding and Sarah Reed. In 1901 the family, Clifford having seven siblings, lived in Albert Street. His father died in 1898 and in 1901 the family lived in 9 Somerset Place. In 1911, aged 20, Clifford was living with his mother in 85 Friarn Street and he worked as a Marine store Dealer, having been given a job by his older brother Henry. In October 1914 Clifford married Alice Maud Mary Thorne and they set up home in 46 Barclay Street, next door to his brother Henry.
Clifford was killed on 8 June 1917. He was 26 years old. On 20 June 1917 the Bridgwater Mercury reported 'Local soldier dies of wounds: Private Clifford Redding, Somerset L.I. has died following wounds he received in action. He had been severely wounded in the abdomen. He was 26 years old. Officers paid tribute.
He is buried in the Achiet-le-Grand Cemetery, plot I. J. 11. His name was added to his father's memorial in the Wembdon Road Cemetery (number 679), which also bears the name of his brother Henry who would be killed later in 1917. The inscription reads: In Loving Memory of our dear father William Henry Redding 8th July 1898 aged 48 years. Also of Sarah Redding dearly beloved wife of the above who passed away 7th August 1927 aged 76 years. Pte C Redding France 8th June 1917 aged 26 years. Sergt HG Redding Palestine 23rd November 1917 aged 38 years. Thy Will be Done.
