Diary: Sunday 16 April 2023

Dave, Astrid, Alan, Rita and Chris working in the cemetery today (16 April 2023). After weeks of hard labour they felt they would have an easy day today. First job was to fold up and pack away the empty dumpy bags which S.D.C. kindly emptied for us.

This done the team walked around the cemetery to see what jobs would be tackled next.

Today everyone did a little of something they fancied doing. Dave dug up the small oak trees which have sprung up against the Pantomime wall, these will be potted up and at some time re-planted into a good position – not right next to a stone wall where these had sprung up.

Alan and Astrid used the battery powered sprayer and washed the Harris and Jenkins headstones that had recently been re-erected by Fine memorials. The Jenkins stone needs another clean as this was heavily covered in green lichen and algae.

Rita weeded the Scott grave in Section A. Chris assisted by Dave did a good job cleaning a number of graves in Plan 8 area.

We had a visitor, Robert, who used to assist Joyce with the slides when she did talks to groups on the Wembdon Road cemetery. He was interested in the Titanic as yesterday was Titanic Remembrance Day. Alan showed him the Ricks memorial where Cyril Ricks who lost his life on the Titanic and was buried at sea, he is commemorated on the Ricks memorial. Alan gave him a tour of the cemetery pointing out a number of interesting memorials.

Photographs were taken of the area Alan tidied in the week also photographs were taken of the two headstones that were cleaned.

For a change everyone still had a spring in their step when they left for home!
