Diary: Sunday 31 March 2024

Alan, Rita, Dave, Astrid and Chris all arrived at the cemetery on time – no one forgot to put their clocks forward (31 March 2024). Turned out to be quite a nice day the sun shone and not one drop of rain!

Just before Chris arrived the girls were asked by Alan and Dave to give them a hand! Shocked at this request at being wanted they quickly went over to give their assistance as all hands were needed to lever the laid down headstone back into position on the Taylor N28 grave. The job went smoothly and was soon accomplished. Next job was to pack and level the kerbs in some form of order, more work needed here as the ground was so wet, cement will be needed to secure the kerbs. After the boys had finished this job and taken a photo, they walked around plan 14 and identified 5 graves where the memorial stones needed attention. In section N St Mary’s Section there were 4 graves that needed attention. Most of these graves are overgrown with kerbs fallen over and some are broken. It was agreed that this would be the next phase of our work for the team over the coming months.

Meanwhile after assisting the boys for 20 minutes or so Astrid weeded a good half of the flower area behind the first house on Wembdon Road and then planted 3 pots of plants that Dave had brought in. Two more pots of cuttings were not quite strong enough to plant out so they will be re-potted up and planted later. Rita carried on with clearing the brambles and weeds around the corner from Astrid, where work was started last week.

It was nice to see the cemetery had its first grass cut of the year and was looking pretty good, thank you to Duncan Lane and his team.
