Although wet weather was forecast it turned out to be quite a nice day (28 April 2024). Chris, Dave and Alan working today. Alan arrived early and put two wheelbarrows of earth in the Badger grave 14-19 he had just finished when Chris and Dave arrived. Alan replaced the broken pieces of concrete slab back into the centre of the Badger grave, helped by the others as it was like a jigsaw.
While Alan was finishing off fitting the pieces back in, Dave and Chris started work on the Edwards 14-18 grave. It was in a sorry state, the two long kerbs were broken and buried under earth and grass there was also a very small headstone. It was hard work clearing the earth and grass away exposing the broken kerbs and unfortunately the short end kerb appears to be missing. Dave used his fork to see if it had been buried deep in the ground but it could not be found.
Once all the debris was cleared away it could be identified that the landing was broken and had sunk in the middle and the concrete base slab was broken in a number of pieces and sunk. It was agreed that the landing could not be levelled and would be left as it is, but the broken slab pieces could be packed and levelled so that when the kerbs were levelled and cemented back together stone chipping would be added to enhance the appearance of the grave. Alan said when they are next in they would have another look to see if they could find the missing end kerb, if no success there is a spare piece of granite in the graveyard that might be suitable to use. The long kerbs and small headstone were placed around the landing to keep the area tidy. Still a lot of work to do but the grave will look a lot better when finished.
Another productive work session, but they did miss the girls.
