Diary: Sunday 11 August 2024

Dave, Chris, Alan & Rita in the cemetery today (11 August 2024). The first job today was cementing the kerbs back in place on the Wilkinson grave M109 that was started last week. This was covered over to protect from drying out too quickly by the blazing sun.

Rita was sensible and worked in the shade of a nearby tree next to the fence along Provident Place, where it was obvious some children had been having drinks and snacks. They did leave their carrier bag so the cans, bottles and rubbish were picked up and taken home by Rita to dispose of.

Brambles were cleared from around the tree and ivy taken off, also some of the branches were very low so a few were trimmed back. As there was a short supply of dumpy bags the larger bits were stored in a pile and will be cleared away next week if the dumpy bags have been emptied. Rita took the before and Chris took the after photos of her work.

After completing their work on the Wilkinson grave the boys moved to the Shepherd M111 where grass had nearly completely covered the grave. The grass had grown up amongst the stone chipping and black membrane put in the grave some time ago as it was hoped that it would suppress the grass, sadly it did not work. Dave and Chris worked hard taking out the stone chipping that was placed in bags to be washed and cleaned and put back later.

The kerbs were levelled ready to be cemented back together another time. It was so hot it was only possible to work in the sun for about 15 minutes before taking a rest in the shade of the nearby trees.

When Rita & Alan arrived at the cemetery neighbours from Wembdon road were busy working away cutting back their hedge that borders the cemetery. They were pleased with the work completed by the Wessex Water Volunteer Team two weeks ago and decided it was time they gave their hedge a real short back and sides while it had already had a good trim. They carried all their branches etc. and laid them neatly in a pile by our dumpy bags ready for collecting. We are sorry we have given the Town Council additional work to empty so many bags and piles of waste. We had a good chat to Jim and Tracey and their little dog Tilly who kindly posed for a photo for us.
