Diary: 18 and 21 June 2026

Thursday 18 June 2026

Alan and Rita took a trip out to Cannington Quarry to purchase stone chipping for a couple of graves, due to a shortage of manpower there were only a few bags available and it was not known when they would be getting more.  So they purchased 3 bags and dropped them off in the cemetery.

Surprised and delighted to see the long grass had been cut, due to staff shortages they were late cutting this month, but many thanks to the Bridgwater grass cutting team for doing a grand job.

While there they had a walk around the cemetery and more surprises, the large fir tree near to the Brown and Spiller graves had three of its large branches at the top of the tree cut back, they only noticed this as there were a few bits of twigs around the base of the tree. They saw two young men looking at the large Sycamore tree next to Jam Factory Lane which they were looking to do some work on, they were workers from County who were doing work for the Town Council as they have no tree surgeons on their team.

Sunday 21 June 2026

Chris, Astrid, Rita and Alan working in the cemetery today.

Rita watered the plants she put in the flower garden last week, then went to tidy the Read E16 and took a photo for Miles who had requested a newer one, although he had been sent one thought a second one may have been better.

That done she then worked on the Truman grave E20 that was covered in ivy.

Alan & Chris were tidying and cleaning the Wells grave B70 and then as requested a while ago put in stone chipping. This has been a job well overdue but with bad weather and lack of chipping available have only just managed to get the job done. Again lack of team members as only two of us fully fit.

Astrid joined us for our tea break and then all back to work, Chris picked up the bits of twigs etc under the newly trimmed fir tree while Alan drilled drainage holes (that were blocked up) in the Harris grave, Rita and Astrid finished off the last bit of clearing on the Truman grave then they all went under the trees to work in the shade as it had got pretty hot!

So all hands to the deck, amongst the trees next to the Pantomime wall at the bottom part of the cemetery, where weeds, nettles and saplings had sprung up along with ivy, brambles etc in and around the trees. 3 dumpy bags were filled today but the boys only had the strength left to take two bags up to the dumping area!

The other one will go up when all refreshed for next week - that is if the temperature is below 28 degrees!
