Diary: Wednesday 31 July 2024

Alan, Rita and Dave welcomed 12 willing workers from Wessex Water Board at 9 a.m. in the cemetery today (31 July 2024). One day a year their company allow them to help out a charity or good cause in the community, this year they elected to help the Friends in the cemetery. Armed with all types of gardening tools and loads of drinking water they were all set for some hard graft. A willing, helpful and happy bunch set off in all directions after a team talk by Paul and Richard. No rain as hoped for but it was a bit on the warm side!!

A small group set about trimming the saplings on the two large trees as the front of the cemetery plus a tidy up against next doors front garden fence. Ivy was taken off the wall from the front of the cemetery right down to the end, leaving just a few bits that were prettying up the wall.

The holly trees alongside the path into the cemetery had a short back and sides cut and looked all the better for it.

The hedge at the back of the houses in Wembdon road were trimmed and the ‘new hedge’ had a make over with a large pathway made alongside.

The back corner that was really overgrown was cut right down, also the Elder tree stumps which were cut down last year and sprouting were also cut back.

Lastly the hedge along side Jam Factory Lane was also trimmed and ivy cleared from the wall.

Trees around the cemetery were cut back and ivy taken off headstones, nettles and brambles growing yet again against the neighbours fences in Provident Place were also cut back.

All this work would have taken the Friends the rest of the year to do half of what they had accomplished so we were very grateful. Every dumpy bag was filled over 40 bags!

Our heartfelt thanks go to all those wonderful Wessex Water Volunteers. Thank You.

Postscript: Thursday 1 August 2024

Alan and Rita popped in the cemetery this morning to take a few more photo’s as after a full day yesterday got a bit too tired to walk around to systematically take photo’s. Who should we find but the Town Council lads just finishing off cutting the grass. Another group of friendly and happy chaps, so we lined them up and took a photo to show our followers on Facebook our other workers who kindly keep the grass under control for us.

Thank you boys for your hard work.
