Formerly 25920 Somerset Light Infantry then Private 19425 5th Battalion, Dorsetshire Regiment.
Clifford was born in Bridgwater Somerset in the summer of 1880, the youngest of the three children of James and Amelia Washer of 81, Taunton Road.
Initially Clifford followed his father into working in one of the town's many brickyards. Later with his elder brother Sidney Washer, Clifford became a house painter.
In 1915 Clifford married his sweetheart Sarah Duddridge shortly before he was killed in France on 2nd January 1917.
Clifford is recorded at the Ancre British Cemetery, Beaumont-Hamel, Somme, France and also on the kerbstone of the grave of Private Walter Roman who had been invalided from the Front and had died in Cheltenham Military Hospital Gloucestershire in July 1916.
Both men were aged 36, and were brothers-in-law, Walter having married Clifford's sister Henrietta in 1911.
