The Thomas Smith Memorial M1/875

Thomas Smith Memorial M1/875 was repaired on 31 August 2017 by Fine Memorials for the Friends

The Smith memorial M1/875 is a large gothic cross, which remembered a family who made fences, gates and hurdles in Silver Street. The inscription reads: 1/875 In Ever Loving Memory of Thomas Smith who entered into rest Sept. 9th 1911 aged 59 years.'not gone from memory nor from love but to our Fathers house above'. Also In Loving Memory of Elizabeth Smith wife who joined her beloved and entered into fullness of life June 5th 1935 aged 82 years. 'In Gods Keeping'. Elizabeth Ada Smith died February 22nd 1966 aged 91.

This memorial was chosen by the Friends for its size and prominent location in the middle of the cemetery, and not too far from a major focus of repair work last year in the 'Fisher corner.' The Friends also wanted to repair the adjoining Squibbs memorial, for the historical connection to an important photographer. This elaborate gothic cross would make an excellent compliment to it, and this whole area of the cemetery. Fine Memorials came in and cemented and pinned the cross shaft back into place. The Friends volunteers then repaired the kerb stones.
