The Jenkins memorial was repaired in early March 2023 for the Friends of the Cemetery by Fine Memorials.
The Jenkins memorial is a large headstone, not far from the Harris and Skinner memorials also done this year. It was chosen for repair with those others to help improve this part of the Dissenter Old Ground part of the cemetery. This one has a delicate carving of the Angus Dei, the Lamb of God. The inscription reads:
Sacred to the Memory of Maria beloved wife of James Jenkins who departed this life May 7th 1862 aged 49. Also of the afore named James Jenkins who died June 25th 1894 aged 81 years.
James Jenkins was a butcher, farmer and Baptist deacon. He was quite a character, constantly getting into grief with the authorities. He married in 1834 to Maria Sainsbury and they came to run a butchers shop in the High Street. Eventually they moved out to Rexworthy Farm in Enmore, although ultimately Maria's health failed and they moved back to Bridgwater.
Their full story can be read here.
Fine Memorials were able to hoist this memorial back into position, and pack the base to ensure that it does not settle in the years to come. They did a grand job and this should stand for another hundred years at least.
