Full house again this week (12 May 2024), a really hot sunny day so jobs were chosen that were in the shade – well most of them.
The boys took the covers off last weeks job on the Edwards and Burge graves and gave the kerbs a clean up. They used a garden fork to test the ground all around the area to see if they could find the missing end kerb of the Edwards grave to no avail. They found the spare piece of granite and using a bolster chisel cut it back to size, luckily it fitted perfectly. Next weeks job is to cement it in.
Far too hot for cementing today so the boys then took to taking off ivy from headstones and cleaning out the grass and weeds from the graves around the non-conformist area. On clearing the Bradbury grave 10.39 it was noticed the one of the kerbs had been broken, another repair job to be done.
The girls went under the holly tree fairly close to the Redwood tree and decided to clean up around it as there were saplings of holly and plenty of ivy and long grass all around it – not forgetting those little brambles that get everywhere. They remembered to take photo’s, Astrid took one side of the tree and Rita took the other side. It was pretty grim and hard work, and then they looked up to see a lot of dead wood in the tree – this turned out to be old dead ivy that had been cut back a few years ago – nearly 3 inches in diameter. (They don’t do metric!!) They managed to get a fair bit down but there is still some hanging on.

Towards the end of the work session Robert and Fran visited us, they have been in before, a couple of years ago, when Robert brought his cousin from America and they were delighted to be shown where their grandfather was laid to rest, sadly this is unmarked but Robert and his cousin intend to put this right. It was nice to see them again and have a chat, but dinner was in the oven and we had to get home. Another good working day.
